Apron Tankinis

From LoveToKnow Swimsuits

Apron tankinis feature a slightly sexier take on the traditional tankini. So, if you're tired of orthodox one piece swimsuits, bored with the cavalcade of bikinis, and you find traditional tankinis a fashion yawn, then you can show a little skin by purchasing an apron-style tankini!

Tankinis in General

The general tankini consists of two pieces, a top and a bottom. Think of it as a safety bikini, but with the top piece cut like a tank top; hence the name "tankini". Most tankini styles have tops similar to a camisole, and some even feature halters. As the tankini has gained popularity, it has also grown in versatility.

One of the reasons why this swimsuit style remains popular is its ability to flatter many body types. Some find it a more modest take on the bikini, but even women who feel less confident about their torsos are usually comfortable wearing this style.

One piece swimsuit fans will be happy to find that tankinis offer nearly as much coverage as their traditional favorite, but are easier to deal with when making restroom stops. These versatile suits are appropriate for swimmers of any age, from children to adults.

For swimmers who are not as keen about drawing attention to their mid-sections, there is still another alternative: the apron tankini.

Introducing Apron Tankinis

Apron tankinis are a bit different from their predecessors. The top of the suit is built like a banded bikini top, and a curtain of fabric drapes down from the band to cover the torso in a flowing design reminiscent of a baby doll nightie.

Depending on the type of fabric used, these suits can look quite demure, but they can also look fabulously sexy when the apron is created using sheer fabric. You simply need to choose the suit that best compliments your figure.

Advantages and Disadvantages

As mentioned previously, the clear advantage of the apron tankini is that it is a showier, yet more camouflaging version of the average tankini. Many aprons are printed with gypsy patterns to emphasize the flow of the design. However, women requiring more chest support may not receive the same boost as that offered by an ordinary tankini. The apron version of this style often depends on string ties, resulting in a less formidable a design.

Many traditional tankinis come equipped with additional support features. This may involve a built-in shelf or underwire bra, or even push up options. It is possible for an apron tankini to feature a soft cup bra system that is slightly padded, but if you need to feel more secure or you require a little "oomph" up above, then the apron may not be able to supply the support you need.

Additionally, most tankini styles are not ideal for tanning, but the apron tankini can leave you with even more awkward tan lines. The open back design gives more exposure to your back, while the front is still draped in fabric, so your tan turns out uneven.

You can address this problem in a couple of ways. If tanning is important to you, opt for sheer apron tankinis. If you're more concerned about skin care, you can prevent tanning by using sunscreen and avoiding the beach and pool during peak UV hours.

Exploring Style Options

Much like any swimsuit style, once the cut of the material has been established, the design is thereby opened up into a wealth of prints and textures. Apron tankinis may be sleek, shiny, stretchy or lacy, and are available in many colors when the Spring/Summer season rolls around.

Since the tankini is so popular, you can purchase its numerous styles at most major department stores, as well as specialty swim boutiques like Everything But Water. Victoria's Secret is notorious for its wide swimsuit selections, and within the tankini category you are sure to find one or two apron styles.
