Exclusive Baskitwear Swimsuits Interview

Meet Eric Schwers

LTK: How did you get involved with Baskit?

Eric: Baskit is sort of a crazy thing. I was living in London at the time and working in a totally unrelated field, but I was looking for something else in life. A friend there invited me out to dinner one night with some friends of his who were over from the US and, unbeknownst to me, owned Baskit.

During dinner, the topic turned to Baskit and they mentioned an interest in selling it. I knew at once this was the “something else” I was looking for, so I went home that night and did a bunch of research on the market and the brand. It took me another solid six months to convince them to sell it to me because they had been chatting with another company that manages several brands in this segment. So here I am…

LTK: What's a day in the life like for you?

Eric: Long! I get into the office around 5:00 a.m. most days. This helps me catch up with my office in Asia before they close for the day. I also like the quiet time before the rest of the crew comes in (sshh…don’t tell them I said this). There’s e-mail to answer… I still respond to most of the customer e-mails personally. Discussions with the design team on current developments. I speak to my sales team a few times a week. I have to say as normal as some of the everyday business actions are, they are still a lot of fun and always interesting.

LTK: Tell me a little more about the swimsuits you have available. What's your inspiration?

Eric: I like to offer a limited but interesting swimwear collection every year. So, we tend to focus on three styles: A restyled board short…our Short Boards, a traditional bikini cut and a box cut that is form-fitting like a bikini, but a little more of a generous cut.

In terms of inspiration, I tend to look for things that I find are interesting and appealing without being over the top. For example, the inspiration for our Lucky 9s collection comes from the Le Mans car race in France…circa 1950s. You had all these great racing cars, many with the solid racing stripe down the hood of the car and then their car number emblazoned on the center of the hood. It’s just a classic look, and we brought it into swimwear.

About Baskit Swimwear

LTK: What makes Baskit Swimwear stand out among the competition?

Eric: In keeping with our underwear, we really try to produce swimwear that is high-quality and fashion-forward. So when you see Baskit Swimwear, it’s meant to be a bit edgy, but not so much so that the guy feels like he’s out on a limb. We also spend a lot time working out the details. The little things can make a difference. For example, in our Short Board (board shorts) we use a traditional Velcro closure on the pouch but we’ve put a nice layer of thin, soft fabric on the inside of the garment to protect the wearer from rubbing against the Velcro. It sounds like nothing, but after a day playing around on the beach you’ll thank us.

LTK: What new designs can we look forward to in 2009?

Eric: Well, in addition to our Lucky 9s, we focused on horizontal stripes this fall. We have a line with really fine horizontal stripes that we call our Retro Stripe, and then we also offer a Radical Stripe that has three wide stripes of different widths that make up the body of the swimsuit. Both are simple in their look, but they offer something out of the ordinary.

LTK: Where are these swimsuits available?

Eric: We sell at over 100 locations around the world. Check Baskitwear.com for an outlet near you. You can also order online from many of our retailers.

LTK: What is the price?

Eric: Our price point starts around $36.00 for a bikini and goes up from there. Nothing is more than $48.00.

LTK: Which of the swimwear designs is the bestseller?

Eric: The bikini cut. However our box cut is gaining popularity. I think this is because a lot of guys are starting to look for something other than the standard baggy swim trunks. The bikini is one bridge too far for a lot of guys, so they go for the box cut.

LTK: What have some of the highlights been for Baskit as a company?

Eric: Hmmm… We’ve ended up on a few TV shows. [We've] been covered by some great magazines, amazing blogs and I’ve had a good number of celebs contact us for underwear. I think the thing that really makes my day is when we get a handwritten letter from someone telling us how much they appreciate our product. While we get a lot of great feedback (good and bad!), so few people really sit down to write a letter these days. So when we get one, it’s a nice thing.

Choosing Your Style

LTK: What should a man look for in a swimsuit?

Eric: Simple. Something he’ll be comfortable wearing. However, it might be time to reconsider your options next time you go looking for swimwear. The American mentality is changing. We’re becoming more open to seeing guys in form fitting swimwear on the beach. When Daniel Craig stepped out of the surf in his first Bond movie in a tight-fitting swimsuit, the audience took note. Maybe a bikini is not for you? So try a box cut. This style will show off your assets, but provides more coverage than a traditional bikini cut.

LTK: Who is your target customer?

Eric: A guy that appreciates quality and wants something that is a little edgy but not out of bounds.

A Final Word
