A Day at the Beach

Every summer millions of families pack up their cars with their gear, fight traffic and head to the beach. For some, a day at the beach means lounging under a beach umbrella reading a good book. For others, it's laying out in the sun to get a tan. Still others enjoy digging in the sand or frolicking in the water.

There are activities for everyone at the beach, and of course, you can always guarantee a good time when you bring along some beach toys. Years ago, a family that was spending some time at the beach would pack the car mostly with necessary items. Toys were often limited to a striped beach ball or two and maybe some pails and shovels. Fortunately, times have changed. Trunk space is bigger and beach toys have evolved. Children and adults alike now have a large assortment of beach toys to choose from.

Fun Beach Toys

Sandcastle Tools

Young architects take their sandcastles seriously. From castle-shaped pails and molds to shovels and rakes in all shapes and sizes, the tools for building surf side palaces are many. Those who really want to impress may even bring along a sand castle kit complete with all of the components necessary to build something spectacular. Building sandcastles is serious work, which means serious tools are in order.

Even if sandcastles aren't your thing, digging in the sand can still be fun with today's beach toys. Young children don't want to spend their beach time reading books or worshipping in the sun, they want to dig in the sand and get wet. Nowadays, it's easy to find beach toys to contribute to their fun.

Boards

For those brave souls who enjoy riding the surf, there are boogie and surf boards for all levels of enjoyment. Foam core boards are best for beginners and kids, and they're used more as rafts than surf boards.

Balls

The beach ball has been around for ages. Whether kicking them around on the sand or batting them back and forth in the water, everyone enjoys playing with them. They're not just the colorful striped balls we've come to know and love. Beach balls now come in all shapes and sizes for playing in the surf and sand alike.

Kites

All that breeze and atmospheric pressure coming in off the water creates the ideal conditions for flying kites. You can choose a very basic kite and still have fun flying it with the kids, but the lack of trees and power lines makes the beach the perfect place to indulge in one of those large and fanciful kites. On any given day, you'll see giant birds, large American flags and dozens of other unusual and imaginative kites.

Floats and Loungers

If the surf is mild, take advantage by relaxing in the water with a float. If you're visiting a peaceful beach with a lake or one on the bay where the water is calm all the time, take a book and a cold beverage along. Lounge in the water and catch up on your reading or take a short nap. Just be mindful of the sun, and apply plenty of sun block before exposing yourself in this manner.

Kids like floating too. Rings and other floats for children are whimsical and can make them feel like they're riding an animal or other fun shape. Keep in mind that while floaties are fine for bobbing around in the water, they're in no way to be used as a lifesaving device. Children who are too young to stay up in the water on their own should wear a life preserver vest and have a parent or grown up with them at all times.

Beach toys can only enhance time spent at the beach. Having fun items with which to float, dig, kick and throw can provide added hours of fun to an already enjoyable day. The next time you and your family spend some time at the beach, why not bring along some beach toys?
