If you're planning to swim or take part in water sports, then of course you're going to need the right swimsuit, but what about other beach accessories? Umbrellas, chairs, beachmats, surf/boogie boards and a host of other items can make a day at the beach more fun and comfortable, but there are plenty of personal accessories to consider as well.

Coverups

No matter how terrific your swimsuit is, a coverup can come in handy for times when you want a bit more coverage. Sarongs, pareos, terry jackets and even beach towels can all be great items to cover your suit, and protect you from too much sun, or chills after you leave the water.

Footwear

Sand and pavement can feel like a hot frying pan to bare feet in the summertime. Sandals, and flip flops help keep the tops of your feet cool while protecting your soles from burning. Water shoes are another terrific footwear item that can actually be worn in the water and on land to protect your feet from shells, rocks and any other rough surfaces.

Sun Protection

Too much sun can spoil a perfectly lovely day at the beach. Sunscreen is one beach accessory you should never be without, but it doesn't solve all your sun protection needs. Sunglasses and hats are other useful accessories to protect yourself from too much sun exposure, and they can really turn up the wow factor on your beachwear.

Jewelry

Want to look really fabulous? Then you might want to think about accessorizing with some jewelry, although you'll need to consider whether or not you should wear some items into the water. Toe rings, bracelets and belly chains always look great and add pizzazz to even the plainest swimsuit.

Totes

No matter how you choose to accessorize, you're going to need something to help you carry it all to the beach. How about a nice big beach tote? Totes come in different styles and materials, from canvas to mesh, but size is perhaps the most important factor to look for. You'll want a bag that is large enough to carry all of your items.
