Bikini Swimsuits Inspire

adright
It doesn't seem possible that so little fabric could provide so much inspiration, but bikini swimsuits have made a lasting impact on popular culture. They have been the inspiration for such songs as:

  • Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, written by Paul Vance and Lee Packriss (1960).
  • The Thong Song (1999) by Sisqo, Tim Kelley and Bob Robinson. This one became MTV's anthem for spring break 2000.

Bikini swimsuits also inspired a slew of camp-classic beach movies including:

  • Gidget (1959), and Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961)
  • Bikini Beach (1964)
  • Beach Blanket Bingo (1965)
  • How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965)
  • Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine (1965)
  • It's a Bikini World (1967)
  • Bikini Beach (1964)

Today, bikini swimsuits are no longer a novelty, but the main staple of the swimwear industry. Styles have certainly evolved, and the semi-humble two piece has become increasingly scantier with such fashion contributions as the string bikini, Brazilian bikini, the thong, and the fabulously scandalous micro. One has to wonder where the bikini will go from here?

Perhaps nowhere else have bikini swimsuits been more immortalized than in the pages of the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Each year, this top selling issue of any magazine in the world sets the trends for the entire swimsuit season by featuring the selected creations of the industry's top designers such as ViX and Salinas.

Since their introduction in the 1950's, bikini swimsuits have only grown more popular with each passing year, and it's a sure bet that they will be a mainstay in swimwear for a long time to come.
