Mens swimsuits have come a long way.

Once upon a time, a man's swimsuit was a woolen body stocking. It was warm and uncomfortable, not to mention fairly unflattering.

Thank goodness fashions have changed. Today, mens swimsuits come in several styles including trunks, board shorts, briefs and thongs. Knowing which style to choose depends on the purpose you will be using them for, as well as the level of confidence you have in your physique.

Everyday swimwear will usually suffice for the pool or public beach where a high performance swimsuit really isn't required. Trunks and board shorts are two of the most popular choices because they are functional and provide casual comfort.

Briefs are also an option for everyday swimwear. However, they are not quite as popular as the previous styles mentioned because they are a bit more revealing. Briefs hug the body, and if you are at all self-conscious about your abs or thighs, these suits are not going to provide much camouflage.

Thongs can be considered a brief in the extreme. They are very low cut in front, quite thin around the hips, and thay have only a thin scrap of material that covers the divide between your buttocks. Suits of this type require two things; extreme confidence and a venue that allows you to wear them. Many public pools and beaches set their own coverage requirements, and thongs may not be welcomed everywhere.

If you are involved in competitive swimming such as racing or diving, you'll need a very specific type of suit.

Briefs are the only way to go because they hug the body and reduce drag. High performance racing briefs are made of much more durable materials, and they are far more resistant to the wearing effects of chlorine. Choose a suit in your normal size for training, and another suit one size smaller for race day for additional drag reduction.
