Evolution of Women's Swimsuits
You've come a long way, baby, and women's swimsuits have changed dramatically through the centuries. Not so very long ago, your grandmothers and great-grandmothers would have worn heavy bathing costumes to the beach. Imagine being swathed in black from head to toe in ninety-plus degree heat! Not to mention those weights in the skirts to keep them from floating up. No surprise that these archaic women's swimsuits are only found in museums and costume shops today.
Eventually, women's swimsuits evolved into the sensible one-piece, a bathing suit that covered the essentials, but still allowed easy swimming and sun exposure. Yet even this swimwear began to shrink in size, moving away from heavy duty brazier constructions and boyish short bottoms to a more streamlined version that has remained a staple to this day.
Finally, the two-piece bathing suit arrived on the swimwear scene, opening up a virtual Pandora's Box of increasingly sexier swimwear, including sting bikinis and thong swimsuits, and nothing has been the same since.
Fashion Meets Function in Competitive Swimsuits
While it's true that every woman would probably like to look good in her swimsuit, not all swimsuits are chosen based on popular fashion. Competitive swimsuits are designed for racing. These suits are generally made with a higher percentage of spandex material to hug the body more tightly, allowing swimmers faster flow through the waters. Some even have racing strips that are engineered to help water flow past the suit more quickly, reducing drag and increasing a swimmer's speed.
