Danica Patrick may have initially made a splash by being a woman in a decidedly man’s world (only three other women before her were contenders in Indy car racing), but her good looks got her a certain amount of attention as well. Patrick is more girl-next-door than fashion model, but being a pretty face as well as a talented driver has definitely done a lot both for her personal publicity and that of the sport.

Patrick’s first appearance in Sports Illustrated was on the cover of the June 6, 2005 issue, where she was hailed as an athlete. As her fame increased, so did the offers to show off her trim figure once again.

Furthermore, it’s widely acknowledged that Patrick is nobody’s fool. She’s at the helm of her career, clearly the one taking advantage of her own sexuality and looks and successfully parlaying them into more fame and fortune!

As talented as she is on the track, she’s also accomplished in business. However, everyone from sports pundits to driving aficionados wonder if it’s harder to take her seriously as a contender when she’s posing topless. Of course, there is nothing wrong with modeling a swimsuit. For example, Sports Illustrated has featured dozens of popular models, many of whom also run successful businesses based on their names. However, it does lead you to wonder if the same controversy would be experienced if any of the men drivers used their sexuality to expand their careers in a similar fashion.

Of late, women are seen competing with men in sports, the boardroom and politics, but it can’t be denied that a woman’s physical image still plays a factor in her success. If Danica Patrick wants to show that she doesn’t have to hide the fact that she’s a pretty young woman in order to be successful in a man’s world, that’s certainly her choice. She's also driven, determined and talented. The fact that she’s making a healthy retirement fund from it all is a nice bonus that guarantees she’ll be laughing the last laugh; all the way to the bank!
