Embarrassing Swimming Moments

From LoveToKnow Swimsuits

Everyone has stories of embarrassing swimming moments; some that they feel comfortable sharing in a few years, and others that keep them away from the water more than Jaws did beachgoers.

The Ultimate in Embarrassing Swimming Moments

Unintentional Nudity

Without a doubt, unintentional nudity is the winner in the hall of swimming shame. While swimsuits are made of high-quality material and are overall well-constructed and tested, unfortunately, real-world scenarios will always best the tests! Most of the time, you have to hope that if you accidentally show the world much more than you intended, hardly anyone will notice (and hopefully your friends will elect to forget about it!).

The Perils of Diving

Diving is a good way to lose part or all of one’s bathing suit. The sheer force of hitting the water can jerk a suit up or off. Many women tell tales of embarrassing swimming moments when a perfect dive was greeted by applause for a bikini top that rode up or away.

It’s a pretty rare two-piece that can withstand the force of hitting the water at such speed and stay in place, although even one-piece bathing suits are not always immune to such disasters. There is a famous story of Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale who is immortalized in both the cult documentary and Tony-winning Broadway musical Grey Gardens, and the incident that led to her rather flattering nickname.

As a lovely, sought-after New York socialite, Edith was an exceptional swimmer. One day, at a large swimming event, she executed a brilliant dive, but her suit came undone and fell off. Rather than scream and run, she swam two lengths of the pool and was thence known as “Body Beautiful Beale”.

Beware Water Park Slides

A day at the local water park can be a lot of fun for the whole family, but everyone does need to be aware of just how fast they can go down those slides, and subsequently, how hard they will hit the water. Many women have tales of surfacing with their bikini tops up around their necks, desperately trying to get them back where they belong, while strangers, especially teenage boys, laugh and jeer.

However, there is a comedic flip side. Those same boys like to go down the slides head first. They also like to wear baggy swim trunks. Any woman who has ever borne the brunt of boys’ laughter when embarrassed should bring along a camcorder when she sees a boy getting ready to go down a slide head first because that will be an embarrassing swimming moment worth keeping.

Surf’s Down

Surfing and boogie-boarding can also be a source of suitless shame. As if wiping out wasn’t bad enough, surfers wearing either loose shorts or a bikini top risk losing both, depending on how they hit the water; it’s a lot harder to retrieve such essentials in the ocean than it is in a pool! Wise surfers wear tops and shorts that are snug and fasten with clips, rather than strings, to avoid such embarrassments.

The Process of Elimination

While losing one’s suit is the most common story of swimming shame, some brave souls will admit to having lost control of their bladders in the pool or ocean. It makes sense because being surrounded by water, especially if it’s warm, is very relaxing.

In the ocean, of course, it’s likely no one will notice your mishap. However, the pool is a different story, and people report being taunted for months or longer after the accident. Lesson learned: no matter how much you think you don’t have to, be sure to visit the restroom before you dive in.

Be the First to Laugh

Parents often give their kids this advice, and it’s nearly impossible to follow, but necessary. Don’t worry whether your incident will scar you for life; just laugh first and hardest, and no one will be able to tease you for long.

I was diving in to an elevated pool at a hotel two weeks ago and did not realize there was a window where people from the street could look directly in to the pool and watch you swim underwater. Some ladies called out from the street and I asked them what they needed. They thanked me for diving in to the pool with loose swim trunks. They said they had videotaped me diving in to the pool about ten times and my suit came off about six times. I hope I do not end up on youtube. I was so embarassed.

Hi Cody,

Yes, someone was. Here's what she said: Hi, my name is Dana and I work for "First" magazine writing their embarrassing moments page. A topic for an upcoming issue is "My most mortifying swimming moment". I came across this page and was curious to know if you knew any women who would be interested in sharing their embarrassing moment with us. If you could get back to me and let me know, I'd greatly appreciate it! I look forward to hearing from you. Best, Dana

Aside from that, I'm glad that you matured. At least you recognize now that it may not have been the best thing to do, and that's all that counts! Thanks for contributing here.
