Halter Top

From LoveToKnow Swimsuits

You almost can't go wrong choosing halter top swimwear. Whether you prefer a bikini or a one piece swimsuit, the halter can provide a great deal more support than other styles such as a bandeau, and it looks terrific on nearly all body shapes, save one.

The Halter Top is "In"

If you're searching for a great look in summer swimwear, look no further than the halter top. This style of swimsuit top is one of the most versatile around, and can be very flattering to most shapes.

Halter top straps actually run along the outer edges of the breast cups and connect behind the neck, instead of attaching to the back band of the swimsuit like many other styles do, and this is the secret to it's supportive powers.

While black, white and brown swimsuit colors are always popular choices, this season a pastel halter top is the way to go. Pastels really accentuate those golden skin tones of summer goddesses- just think about how gorgeous a nice peach colored halter top looks against tanned skin? Very complimentary.

Shaping Tips

A halter top works well for many bust sizes and shapes. Cyla Weiner of Sylene, a favorite Washington, D.C. boutique, has been helping women find the ultimate fit in swimwear and lingerie since 1975, and shared with us the following advice.

"Halter tops in swimsuits are a great choice for most women because they are so versatile. They give good support and are applicable on most body types, whether you are small or large busted. A halter swimsuit top works well for the shapes of average women too. Overall, this style provides one of the most flattering looks".

Large Busts

The halter top works exceptionally well for larger busts, because of the support it provides. The straps actually gather the bust together, which minimizes overhang at the sides, giving a firmer toned shape.

Smaller Busts

Cyla also recommend the halter style for women with smaller busts. "This style makes women look fuller, as this type of top really lifts you up and supports. If you want an even fuller look, you can add breast pads for an extra boost".

Pear Shapes

Pear shaped women are perhaps the one group that should probably avoid halter style swimwear. Cyla cautions, "I don't think a halter swimsuit top is the most flattering look on someone who is more bottom heavy...it can really accentuate a pear-look shape, drawing attention away from where you'd really like it to be".

Pear shaped women may instead find that a tankini-style swimsuit top in a bright pattern paired with a darker solid bottom piece actually focuses attention on the bust area, while de-emphasizing a fuller bottom.

Cyla's Favorite Manufacturers

Cyla had a few recommendations about where to find terrific halter tops.

"In terms of manufacturers, I believe Anika Brazil does a really good job with her halter swimsuit tops, and Magic Suits came out with some great halter-type tankinis that offer tummy control in all of their suits, smoothing out some problem areas and reducing others".

In the End

In the end, it's hard to go wrong choosing halter top swimwear. Most women appreciate a little extra support no matter what their bust size is, and halters are widely available in every style of women's swimwear. If you're looking to purchase a swimsuit, and you don't really want to do a lot of comparison shopping, the halter is the easiest way to go.
