Kid Trunks

From LoveToKnow Swimsuits

From babies to toddlers to pre-teens, there is a huge variety of fun and practical kids' trunks to be found for swimming in the paddle pool or having fun on the beach. Kids want something that looks and feels good, and parents want something that washes and wears well. Luckily, it's all out there.

Styles of Kids' Trunks

Trunks for babies and toddlers feature handy snaps for easily accessing diapers – they're even designed to keep diapers from getting wet. Beyond that, swimming trunks come in any length or cut you can possibly imagine, and the patterns are even more varied.

Anything either you or your child would like is available, and you can even get something custom-designed for a relatively low price. You can choose board shorts, shorter trunks or organic fibers. When your children are toddlers, trunks can be shared with sisters as well – while swim suits for baby girls can be very cute, trunks are often more practical and easier to care for at that age.

SPF in Fabric

Sun protection has become as natural as spending the day by the water. Parents and children alike are mindful of applying sunblock liberally and regularly, as well as wearing hats and sunglasses. Increasingly, swim suit manufacturers have been stepping up their game and offering extra protection by way of sunscreen within the fabric itself. This is a great idea for the entire family.

Clothing does offer some natural protection. However, damaging sun rays can still penetrate fabric, and this is something you want to prevent, especially where children's delicate skin is concerned.

Many swimming and outdoor clothes claim to have a sun protection factor, but do they? Before you pay extra for kids' trunks that feature SPF as a selling point, take a few things into consideration. First, the darker the fabric, the more of a natural SPF it contains because it doesn’t absorb light as readily. Since most trunks for boys are of a darker hue, this is convenient.

Further, whatever a clothing manufacturer may tout, most of a particular fabric's sun protection has to do with weave. Mesh is less protective than a solidly woven fabric. You can test swim trunks in the store by holding the fabric up to the light and assessing how much light comes through. If you can't see any images through the fabric, it has a natural SPF of at least 15.

If you are buying online, look for a reputable company like Solartex which was founded by two moms with fair-skinned children. All their swimwear features an SPF of 50+.

Going Green

Increasingly, we're all looking to be a little (or a lot) more eco-friendly in every aspect of our lives. The more we learn about the chemical treatments involved in the manufacturing of clothing, the less we want it in our lives. When it comes to kids' trunks, it may seem as though this is less of an issue. After all, trunks are only worn for limited periods of time. However, it's still preferable to have a more natural and less treated fabric next to your child's skin.

There is much that is still unknown about common chemicals and dyes and how they can affect someone over the years. It's better to spend a little more money on an organic fiber now, rather than risk compromising your child's health. Look for organic cotton, bamboo and even hemp in trunks that will hold up well and make for a more worry-free summer.
