Mens Bikini Swimsuits
From LoveToKnow Swimsuits
Mens bikini swimsuits are not for the faint of heart. They are skimpy and revealing and they say a lot about the man who wears them. Wearing a man's bikini requires confidence, a strong sense of style and excellent grooming.
A Brief History of Men's Bikinis
The bikini dates back to earlier times. Cave men wore loin cloths that were similar to the bikini in size and coverage.
However by the 1900s, modesty reigned. Men were required to wear skirts over their swim trunks and keep their chest covered in the 1920s. Even in the 1930s, few men bared their chests. However, in 1933, Olympic swimmer Johnny Weismuller was seen in a chest baring swimsuit from the B.V.D company, and that look started a new trend in men's swimwear.
By the 1950s, swim trunks were the standard swimwear for men. In the radical 1960s, some men were wearing skimpy thongs on the beach. During this decade, Austrian-born designer Rudi Gernrich started using new Lycra-like fabrics to create form revealing suits. He is credited with the invention of the racy monokini and pubikini, and although these suits weren't convential, he definitely revolutionized swimwear.
In the 1970s, men's swimwear became more casual, and cutoff shorts were standard on the beach. But by the 1980s, physical fitness was the craze again, and form fitting swimsuits were once again in style. By the turn of the next century, fashion was about personal preference.
Types of Mens Bikini Swimsuits
Mens bikini swimsuits come in a variety of styles. No longer is the Speedo the only option on the market. Technically, a bikini is described as a swimsuit that covers three quarters of a man's rear.
However, these suits can vary in size and design with string or tie sides and low or high front panels. They can also come as G-strings, thongs or microkini suits that barely cover anything. Bikinis do not have waist bands, and most modern versions are seamless for a smooth, tight fit.
Bikinis are skimpy and not often seen on American men who tend to prefer boxer style and board short bathing suits. The larger bathing suits favored in the U.S. probably harken back to the Puritan founders of the country. Plus, as Americans become more aware of the dangers of sun damage, the sporty suits that offer more coverage are more practical.
That being said, menswear has become more exciting in recent years. Combine that with a fitness craze, and men want more choices to show off their physique and express their own fashion preferences. Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabana and Greek designer Nikos Apostolopoulos have designed mens bikinis in recent years. Apostolopoulos' swimsuits are anatomically correct and define every bump and curve on a man's lower body.
