Mesh Bikinis
From LoveToKnow Swimsuits
Mesh bikinis are a delightfully different style of swimsuit. Come find out why!
About Mesh Bikinis
You might not see as many mesh bikinis on the beach as you do more traditional styles, but when you do they always catch the eye. These barely there bikinis cover all of your strategic areas, but they tantalize by giving that extra peek of what lies beneath.
Mesh bikinis achieved some real popularity during the 1970's, when the homemade look was definitely hot. In fact, the most famous mesh swimsuit ever made appeared in the 1978 edition of Sports Illustrated Magazine.
Super model Cheryl Tiegs was clad in a white fishnet swimsuit that looked perfectly decent on the beach, but once she hit the water, the suit became transparent. Somehow one of these shots made its way into the layout, and the rest is history.
Today, mesh swimwear is still for the more adventurous beach goer, but there are plenty of styles to choose from. The crochet bikini is by far the most popular mesh style, but you can find suits in vinyl and Lycra as well.
Cuts
Mesh bikinis run the full gamut of swimsuit styles, including:
- Full scoop bottoms and halter tops
- Tonga bottoms and triangle tops
- Brazilian thongs
- Micro tops and bottoms
Many of these styles are available with or without lining, so you still have a bit of control over exactly how much you want to show.
Another Mesh Swimsuit
Not quite ready to go for a full mesh bikini? Why not consider a sheer swimsuit instead?
Sheer swimsuits look just like other bathing suits, but take a good look at one close up. You'll see that the material is actually a very fine mesh that is nearly invisible to the eye.
The purpose of these suits is to allow far greater sun exposure to areas of your body that normally never see the light of day. This means you have the opportunity to sunbathe without developing those pesky tan lines that never seem to match up with the rest of your summer wardrobe.
Unlike many mesh bikinis, sheer swimsuits do not become see-through when wet, so they're probably a better choice for public swimming venues.
Bikini Care
Mesh swimwear is prone to snagging and shrinking, and sun, sand, tanning oils and chlorine can all take a toll on the fabric. Follow these tips to keep your suit in the best possible condition and extend its wear:
- Wash as soon as possible after wearing
- Always hand wash, never machine wash
- Use a mild detergent formulated for swimwear and lingerie
- Air dry, never machine dry
