Neoprene Wet Suits

About Neoprene Wet Suits
Neoprene wet suits are made of a special rubber, and can be used for diving, Kayaking, rafting, and underwater photography. The neoprene material makes the suits fairly waterproof, buoyant, and stretchable. These suits are designed to let some water in, and that water works to keep the body warm when diving. There’s enough water between the suit and the skin so that the wearer’s body heats it up and preserves additional heat that may otherwise escape under the water.
You can choose the thickness of your suit based on which type of diving or other water activity you’re going to take part in. The thicker the neoprene, the more insulation you'll have. In other words, if the water will be cold, opt for a thicker suit. Planning on tropical diving? Go for something thinner. You’ll still be able to protect your body from sunburn and cuts, but you won’t need the additional thickness you would in other climates.
Neoprene ranges in thicknesses from 1/16 to 1/4 of an inch. Colors vary depending on the supplier.
Why Consider Neoprene?
What really makes neoprene wet suits appealing is their versatility. Not only can you choose your thickness, but you can also choose from a wide variety of colors. Some companies will design custom suits. That means you can mix and match colors, thicknesses, and styles.
These suits are also stretchy, so if you eat a slice or two of cake the day before your dive, it shouldn’t make too much of a difference! You will still want to have assistance in getting measured for your suit, but do realize that they stretch a bit, and let it ease your mind. You won’t pay $200.00 for a suit, and then ruin it by gaining a pound or two.
Where to Shop
Underwater Hunters offers quite a few neoprene blends, as well as tips on how to clean them after use.
Here are a few suggestions:
- If you use Underwater Hunters' Greased Lightening spray, simply rinse your suit in fresh water and dry thoroughly before storing.
- If you aren’t using Greased Lightning, soak your suit in antibacterial soap and fresh water after you wear it. Then just let it dry, and store it until the next time you dive.
Henderson also has wet suits made of neoprene. Choices include jump suits that cover most of your body, vests, hooded vests, and even core warmers.
Mountain Equipment Co-Op suits are available in neoprene. You can also purchase Aquaseal Neoprene Cement to repair torn wet suits. Sounds better than buying a new suit, doesn't it? It’s incredibly inexpensive and quicker than ordering a replacement suit before your next water activity.
DiveSkin.net has seven pages of neoprene styles and accessories for you to choose from. You may even find yourself eyeing the urban camo for spear fishing and underwater photography.
Custom Suits
You can opt to have neoprene wet suits custom-made to fit your body in the color and style you want. It doesn’t matter if you’re tall, short, plus-sized, junior-sized, or have special needs. A custom fitting session will supply all the info necessary to create a wet suit especially for you.
WetSuitWearhouse.com allows you to choose your own color in the measurements of your own body.

Remember to choose your suit with care. Take into account the water activities you enjoy most when you order. That will determine which thickness you need. Neoprene offers such versatility, durability, and so many choices for self-expression; it may just be the perfect wet suit material to fit all of your needs.
