One Piece Swimsuits

From LoveToKnow Swimsuits

One piece swimsuits or maillots are a traditional bathing suit. Worn in some form or another since the 1930's, they were once considered very daring and sexy, and are still thought so by many men and women.

Why One Piece Swimsuits?

One piece bathing suits are designed to cover the belly area, unlike bikini’s which show off the midriff. Many women want to hide their bellies after childbirth due to bulges, stretch marks and wrinkles. While these "body flaws" tend to diminish with time, exercise and a healthy diet, many women decide not to wear a bikini for a number of years after pregnancy. A one piece bathing suit can be a great solution that gives you the confidence to hit the water once again.

Some women, regardless of what their bodies look like, just prefer a more modest suit.

Once piece swimsuits are great for swimming and many other beach activities. There are generally no worries about your suit slipping, shifting and possibly exposing body parts you'd rather not have seen, as can happen with a skimpier bikini. You'll have the freedom to run, and play on the beach or at the pool side, and even chase the kiddies around, an advantage for busy moms and other care givers.

Old Fashioned?

Some people may find the one piece a bit tame, especially when compared to the tankini, a bathing suit that’s a cross between a bikini and a one piece. However, swimsuit designers have come up with many new design ideas that make one piece swimsuits anything but old fashioned. Some one piece bathing suits are available as halters, or one shouldered, while other suits have strategic cut-outs covered with lace and mesh. You can even get a once piece swimsuit with a belt to break the midline and perhaps create the illusion of a tankini. The possibilities are endless.

If you’re truly afraid of appearing old fashioned but want to wear a one piece, why not wrap a sarong around your waist for a terrific modern look. Consider choosing a bold pattern and/or color to dispel the old fashioned look of a traditional suit. Animal prints can be a great choice for changing your one piece from dull to daring. A one piece swimsuit with a plunging back line also provides a very modern, sexy look.

Who Can Wear a One Piece Bathing Suit?

One piece swimsuits look great on any and all body types, so here are a few suggestions to find a one piece suit that compliments your own body shape.

  • If you’re short, look for French cut one piece bathing suits. French cut suits are cut higher in the legs to reveal much more hip, giving the illusion of longer legs.
  • One piece bathing suits create a great silhouette if you have an hour-glass figure or a figure with a smaller waist but a larger bust and hips.
  • Look for a one piece bathing suit with underwire support if you are large chested and/or require more support.
  • If you feel your hips are larger than you'd like, consider wearing a suit with a skirt or a sarong.
  • If you want to de-emphasize your chest, a halter top can help minimize the appearance of your bust.
  • If you want to draw attention away from your lower half, look for a one piece swimsuit with a V-neck to draw attention up and away from your hips. You can also try a bathing suit with wider straps.
  • Larger women may find that avoiding horizontal stripes and large prints can have a slimming effect on their silhouettes.

Minimizers

Many one piece swimsuits have hidden panels to minimize tummies and hips, and are much more comfortable than you might think. A word of caution though; sometimes bulges can be created outside the bathing suit if you’re not wearing the proper size, so be sure to try the suit on before you purchase it. The shoulder straps should never cut into your skin and the leg holes should be comfortable, without creating bulges in your hips.

Now that you know the ins and outs of selecting the perfect one piece, feel free to get out there and enjoy one.
