Picking Out Pool Clothes
Every girl knows that when summer approaches, your pool clothes become just as important as the clothes you wear every day to work or school. In fact, the clothes you wear to the pool may be even more important this time of year. Pool clothes are much more revealing than your everyday outfits, so when it comes to selecting them, you'll want to take special care to make sure that the clothes you choose are comfortable, as well as flattering.
So, what should you buy? Bikinis, tankini swimsuits, one piece swimsuits, sarongs, swim dresses, sunglasses, flip flops – the choices can seem overwhelming, and even once you start to narrow things down, you still have decisions to make. Will a string bikini be more flattering on you than a thong bikini, or should you simply cut your losses and go for boy shorts instead? And what kind of sunglasses should you be looking at?
Relax. Summer vacations and days at the pool are fun, and picking out a wardrobe of pool clothes should be fun, too. Just follow our simple guidelines below to make sure you get everything you need.
Pool Clothes: The Essentials
When you're spending the day at the pool, you don't want to be weighed down with a large amount of baggage. Instead, focus on shopping for these few pool wear essentials, and you'll always be prepared for some fun in the sun.
A Swim Suit
Well, you can't visit the pool without one, can you? The type of swimsuit you choose will depend on your taste, bodyshape, and how comfortable you are with your figure. We'll discuss these issues later, but for now, just make sure you add at least one swimsuit to your shopping list, or more if possible. If you're anticipating spending more than one day by the pool, you may actually want to have a range of different suits to wear.
Sunglasses
Although you're at the pool to relax and enjoy yourself, it's important to make sure that you look after yourself too, and that means wearing a high factor sunscreen, and protecting your eyes from the sun. Remember that the sun's glare can seem even more powerful when those rays are glancing off the water, so choose sunglasses that offer good UV protection as well as looking good. You'll find a guide to the UV Index at LoveToKnow Sunglasses.
Flip Flops
Although it's tempting to go barefoot while you're at the pool, you could risk damaging your feet on sharp stones or broken glass, or pick up a veruca if you walk around in bare feet. A cheap pair of flip flops are easy to slip on and off as you walk between pool and sunlounger, and won't get ruined by the water.
A Sun Hat
The scalp is an area that's often forgotten when applying sunscreen. A sun hat reduces your chances of sunburn, and it'll also help protect against heat stroke.
A Cover Up
If you'd rather not have your body on show all the time, want to protect yourself from the sun, or just need something to slip into when you're going between pool, bar and café, a sarong, swim dress or other coverup is ideal.
Dressing for Your Body Shape
It's possible to find pool clothes to flatter any figure. For example:
- One piece swimsuits are a good all around choice, especially on larger frames, or for anyone who doesn't feel comfortable in a bikini.
- Boy shorts offer coverage of the hips and bottom, but are generally low-waisted, making bellies look longer and leaner in most cases.
- Tankini swimsuits are a great halfway house between the bikini and one piece, and a good choice for women with bigger busts, who may worry about popping out of a regular bikini top.
- Swim dresses are an excellent choice for those who consider their thighs a problem area.
- Thong bikinis are mainly the province of the the hardbody crowd, so wear with caution!
