From LoveToKnow Swimsuits
Building sandcastle sculptures is a time honored beach tradition. If you'd like to learn how to build sandcastles like the pros, this primer will help you get started.
About Sandcastle Sculptures
Whether it's filling a plastic bucket with wet sand and dumping it over to create a shape, or stacking wet sand to form elaborate tunnels and turrets, building sandcastles is a favorite pastime for children of all ages. It doesn't matter whether you're six or sixty, there's just something so amazingly satisfying about building your own fantasy creation.
If this sounds enticing to you, pack up your swimsuit, towel, and chair, but first, let's talk about the basics of sandcastle construction. After that we'll talk about where you can show off your skills.
How to Build Sandcastles
Sure, you can build sandcastle sculptures that are easily made in an hour, but they can just as easily collapse or wash away. Let us give you tips for building fabulous sandcastles that will give you a chance to get really creative.
Tools of the Trade
To build the perfect sandcastle, you'll need the proper tools. It's really not necessary to use buckets or shovels; the best method for creating a sandcastle is "hand stacking", which means piling up wet sand by hand. You will want to take along scraping or carving tools such as putty knives or plastic utensils. If you're feeling really ambitious, professional sandcastle tools can be purchased, but they're not necessary.
Where to Build
Choosing the right spot is essential. You don't want to be so close to the water that waves will damage your creation. You also don't want to venture too far from the water's edge either, as water is a necessary item in your sandcastle building arsenal.
Wet Sand
Once you find your ideal location, start digging. Dig far enough down so that the sand is dark and damp. You want to work with wet sand, which may mean working quickly. It wouldn't hurt to keep a bucket or spray bottle filled with water nearby. Scoop piles of wet sand into the area in which you'll be working. Form the sand so it resembles a pancake and stack these pancakes on top of each other. You may need to wet it again to cement the sand stacks together.
If you'd like to connect the stacks together you can make bricks. Place some wet sand in your hand and shake it to and fro so it resembles a loose brick. Stack these in the manner as your sand pancakes.
Finishing Up
Just keep stacking your pancakes and bricks until you have something resembling a sand castle. Once that is done take your utensils and smooth out or carve towers, windows, doors, a roof or whatever else you'd like for your castle.
Sandcastles Contests
Once you've built a few ambitious sandcastle sculptures, you might feel like testing your skills against the pros. Most public beaches sponsor at least one sandcastle contest during the summer season, and whether you win or lose, it's absolutely amazing to see what others can create with wet sand and a lot of ingenuity.
Sometimes there's an entry fee, other contests simply require that you register ahead of time so space is reserved for you. Many contests offer age divisions so everyone has a chance to participate.
Tips to Remember
- Wet sand works best.
- When stacking your piles of sand, don't pound or push. Stack loosely.
- A plastic drinking straw will help blow light debris from your sand castle.
- Look around for items to decorate your masterpiece. Rocks, feathers, shells and mini-flags all add dimension to finished sandcastle sculptures, so use your imagination.
The next time you go to the beach, why not try this method for building a sandcastle? With a little practice, you'll be sculpting like a pro!
