Skimpy Bikinis
From LoveToKnow Swimsuits
Skimpy bikinis are a blessing to some and an annoyance to others. Love them or hate them, but, if current trends hold true, they are here to stay.
Attitudes About Skimpy Bikinis
While there are exceptions to every rule, there seems to be a divide in attitudes about wearing skimpy bikinis.
Although you'll find a number of well-toned young women sporting skimpy bikinis at the beaches and pools of North America, most of these enticing swimsuits still leave at least a little to the imagination. Sexy bikinis come in many different cuts, some revealing a bit more flesh, others revealing a bit less.
The common attitude toward mini bikinis in the Northern hemisphere is generally a conservative one. Mostly it's the young and extremely physically fit beachgoers who have the confidence to wear the most revealing suits, and they need to be careful about where they choose to wear them. Many public swimming venues post guidelines about what is considered acceptable or "decent" swimwear, and truly skimpy bikinis are often not welcome.
In South America and parts of Europe it's a completely different story.
Brazil just might be considered the bikini capital of the world, and designers here have given new meaning to the term "skimpy". A quick scan of the beaches in Rio and many other places along the coastline reveals a very open attitude about body images, and in this climate, just about anything goes.
You don't need to be a young hard-body to enjoy the freedom offered by less restrictive swimwear. Here you'll find men and women of every age and conceivable body shape wearing the smallest swimsuits imaginable, and no one seems to find it anything other than ordinary. Skimpy bikinis are looked upon as standard beachwear for those who hope to soak up the sun, a national pastime on sunny South American shores.
Why such a difference in attitudes between North and South? Who can say for sure, but in the North, wearing skimpy bikinis seems to have more to do with expressing your sexuality, while in the South they're really just viewed as more practical.
Styles
Skimpy bikinis range from merely sexy cuts to barely there at all. Let's take a look at the three main styles:
- String bikinis are fairly common in most parts of the world and offer the most coverage compared to other bikini styles. These suits show a good deal of flesh, but the strings allow you to adjust just how much you want to reveal. Bottoms range from scoops that cover nearly the whole behind to tangas that leave the outer half of each cheek exposed.
- Brazilian bikinis are similar to the string bikini, but offer at least two inches less material around the perimeters. The typical Brazilian bikini bottom begins with a tanga, but the coverage on some suits is reduced to the fio dental, affectionately referred to as "dental floss".
- The third and most daring of all bikini styles is the Micro. These suits offer little more than strips of fabric attached by strings, and leave almost nothing to the imagination. Some of these suits are also see-through, raising them to white hot status.
Conclusion
Bikinis have certainly undergone quite an evolution since they were first introduced to the swimwear scene. What was once considered risque in the past is rather tame by today's standards. Just look at a micro now, and try to imagine where we might be in another ten or twenty years?
