Why Swim Shorts Are the New Bikini Bottoms
If you're tired of teeny-weeny bikini bottoms that reveal more than they conceal, you're probably loving the current fashion for swim shorts, sometimes referred to as board shorts.
Let's face it, not all of us feel comforable in the traditional bikini. If you have any issues at all with either your butt, belly, hips or thighs - and who doesn't?- then bikini bottoms aren't exactly going to help matters. While swimsuit coverups such as sarongs, swim dresses, and other items of clothing designed to preserve your modesty and flatter your figure will certainly help, not everyone wants to stay covered up on the beach. What you want is a bikini bottom you're not ashamed to be seen in. That's where board shorts come in.
Why We Love Swim Shorts
Swim shorts give you the best of both worlds. Instead of covering you up like a one piece or voluminous sarong, they allow you to enjoy all of the benefits of a bikini, without having to worry about revealing more of your figure than you want to.
These board shorts are also cut to flatter. Most of today's styles are hipsters, with waistlines that sit just below your natural waist. If you're not used to wearing hipster shorts, you may be a little wary of wearing them on the beach, thinking low-rise shorts might reveal even more of your belly than a bikini.
Actually, the reverse is true. Many of the skimpier styles of bikini bottoms are cut to sit at the natural waist. If your belly is bigger than you'd like it to be, that can mean that your body is effectively cut in half, with any excess flesh spilling out over the top of your bikini bottoms. Not a very flattering look when you think about it.
Low rise swim shorts, on the other hand, sit below the belly, creating the illusion of a flatter stomach than is actually there. Because they sit on the hips, there's no unsightly overspill, either. Board shorts also give more coverage to the bottom and thighs, other areas which many women tend to worry about.
Where to Buy
As more and more designers/retailers start to realise just how flattering and easy to wear these shorts can be, the selection has grown significantly, so you shouldn't have a problem locating a pair to suit you. Some swim shorts are sold as part of a bikini or tankini set, but others are sold as separates, allowing you to mix and match your favorite styles of shorts and bikini tops.
Here are some of our favorite swim shorts for this season:
At just under $20 per pair, and available in bright, summer colors, Target's basic boy shorts are so inexpensive you can afford to stock up.
With clever ruching which allows you to decide just how long or short you'd like your swim shorts to be, these are the perfect solution for those of us who just can't make our minds up what to buy.
Sleek, sporty styling is what made Nike fanmous, and these classic black water shorts are a case in point.
A slightly more sexy short, with a hipster waist and high-cut sides.
Conclusion
As you can see, swim shorts still have a lot of fashion flair to offer, just in a less revealing cut. If you're still hesitating to buy that new swimsuit, why not consider trying a different style this year, and reach for a pair of shorts instead?
