Swim Trunks

From LoveToKnow Swimsuits

While women have many choices of swimsuit styles, swim trunks are by far the most popular for men. When choosing a particular pair, however, there are certain considerations that need to be made to guarantee a comfortable fit for hours of fun at the beach and pool.

Types of Swim Trunks

Swim trunks are a universal type of men’s apparel, suitable for men of any age, physique, and fitness level. While most men will not feel comfortable in a speedo or other revealing garment, trunks can be found to suit any individual taste.

While most people consider trunks to be any style of men’s swimwear that resembles standard shorts, there are actually two specific types of trunks that are distinguished by length. The first, and more common style, are the standard medium length. These usually reach to the mid- or upper-thigh and allow significant tanning. Boardshorts or surfing shorts, on the other hand, are typically longer – reaching as far as the knee in some styles. While they may be more stylish, boardshorts offer very little opportunity for tanning, and can create distinctive tan lines that may be visible if regular clothing shorts are a shorter length.

Choosing Swim Trunks

The key to choosing appropriate swim trunks are to find those that are the most comfortable and practical for the wearer. Naturally, a loose-fitting yet still secure suit is desired for freedom of movement, and style preference can vary according to what activities will be undertaken.

Characteristics

There are several characteristics to consider when purchasing appropriate men’s trunks, including:

  • Waistbands: Many styles offer both an elastic and a drawstring waistband for the ultimate in personal sizing and security. This is especially valuable if the trunks will be worn for multiple years, when the size requirements may change.
  • Type of fabric: Most standard suits are made of nylon or polyester for quick-drying. Heavier fabrics are more durable, however, if the trunks will double as casual beachwear.
  • Pockets: Most men prefer to carry keys or money with them, even while at the beach, and trunk pockets should be sufficiently deep to accommodate small items. Many styles offer a secure interior pocket with a Velcro or button flap to prevent accidental loss.
  • Lining: Most trunks feature an interior net lining for added support and security. This is a valuable feature for men accustomed to briefs or other form-fitting garments.
  • Leg width: Some trunks are designed to be more form-fitting than others and may be uncomfortably tight around the thighs, while others may be too baggy and prone to twisting or bubbling for individual tastes.
  • Colors: Many different colors are available, from neon shades to muted hues and solid black. Abstract patterns involving geometric shapes (squares, wavy lines, etc.) are also popular, particularly in blues and greens reminiscent of water. For the more adventurous individual, animal patterns and more exotic prints are available. Many designs also feature designer labels and corporate logos.

Wearing

When wearing swim trunks, the key concern is security. While younger men may prefer a style that drapes below the hips, it is important to remember that when wet, the suit will weigh much more and may sag too low for decency. Basic trunks can be worn at the natural waist, lower on the hips, or sagged as the wearer’s individual preferences dictate.

While Swimming

Because trunks are loose, they present an unusual hazard in the water – they may fill up with pockets of air, bulging and bubbling uncomfortably. Nylon trunks are particularly susceptible to this – boardshorts are typically made of heavier fabric and because of their length, do not usually trap air in this way. To eliminate the bubbles, simply press the shorts down into the water until the air is released. When exiting the water, be sure to press on any pockets to prevent excess liquid from dragging the suit down.

Swim trunks are the most popular style of men’s swimwear, and while they may seem basic and unimaginative, there are actually many types of trunks available in different colors, styles, and lengths. By choosing the best pair to suit your needs and swimming preferences, you are guaranteed to have a great time at the pool, beach, or lake all summer long.
