Swimming Pool Games to Play

From LoveToKnow Swimsuits

Kids and adults alike will have a blast in the summer with a variety of swimming pool games to play. Swimming provides great exercise while also being fun, so you can get in better shape without feeling like you're working out. Children may not be as concerned with the fitness part, but an entire family can enjoy an activity together, have a good time and fit in healthy exercise all at once.

Types of Swimming Pool Games to Play

There are games that have been around for a long time, such as Marco Polo, but you can always be inventive and make up your own. Some games require a bit of equipment, but others only need your imagination. Some popular swimming pool games to play this summer include:

Marco Polo

This is an oldie, but a goodie. The rules are very simple, allowing even the youngest children to take part. The more participants there are, the more fun this game is. Everyone gets into the pool and someone is designated "Marco."

Marco shuts his eyes and then calls out "Marco" and everyone else must respond "Polo." Marco tries to tag whoever he can by listening to their responses and judging where they are. If Marco tags someone, that player becomes Marco.

Volleyball

This game will require a volleyball and a net. You can usually find pool-suitable volleyball sets wherever pool toys and equipment are sold. The net fits from one side of the pool to the other, and as in a regular game of volleyball, one team serves and the game begins. You can bend the rules the way you want to make it suitable for any age group to play.

Races or Relay Races

Players can race with boogie boards, flotation tubes or by swimming laps. You can have as many players that can fit the length of the pool without it being too crowded, so the number of participants will depend on the size of the pool.

A referee can stand at the end of the pool, yell "Go" and players race either to the other end or to the other end and back. You can also plan relay races, where players race to the other end of the pool, pass a baton or other pool stick/toy to their teammate, and then have the teammate swim or ride back to the starting point.

  • Diving games: Use pool sticks or other toys that sink to the bottom of the pool. Let someone throw the toys in and on a whistle or the word "Go," players dive into the pool to collect them. Whoever gets the most toys wins.
  • Dodgeball: You can use a beach ball or pool ball that holds a lot of water for this game. Players try to hit each other while dodging balls that are thrown at them. Just as in regular dodgeball, if you're hit, you're out.
  • Other games: You can adapt many land games for playing in the water, such as tag, freeze tag or even soccer. Some of the best games are made up by imaginative children, so don't be afraid to make up your own fun and games. This way, you get to make up all the rules!

Resources and Water Safety

Don't forget that children should never be left unsupervised while swimming. If there are a lot of children playing pool games at a swim party, it's best to have several adults on hand to make sure that everyone is safe while having fun.

Parents may consider having separate play times for different age groups, or dividing the pool; young children can play games in the shallow end, while older kids and teens who are capable swimmers can play in the deeper end. Summer is the perfect time for children and grownups to have fun in the sun and the swimming pool.
