Swimsuits for Teenage Girls

From LoveToKnow Swimsuits

Of all the fights parents and kids have, what constitutes appropriate swimsuits for teenage girls ranks right up there with conflicts about dating, makeup, and heels. Fortunately, there are some swimsuit designers who can help parents and kids find some good middle ground.

Problems with Swimsuits for Teenage Girls

The increased sexualization of girls at younger and younger ages means that swimsuits, already an awkward arena for parents because of the form fitting and skin-baring nature of these garments, have become a whole new battleground.

A Parent's View

Of course, it’s really just a spin on an age-old battle. Ever since the advent of the bikini, parents have grown increasingly appalled at their daughters’ willingness to flaunt their flesh in public. However, as these swimsuits have grown smaller and the statements more obvious, such as hearts or writing across the bottom, teen girls have been drawing more and more attention. Parents, understandably, aren't always happy about this.

A Teen's View

Teens, on the other hand, don’t see what the big deal is. They want to show off their changing physique and have a good time in the sun without anyone making a fuss. It’s one of the few opportunities where they can be skimpy yet appropriate and comparatively safe. However, a number of teens actually don’t want a sexy suit; they want something cute and practical, but not too conservative or sporty.

Finally, swimsuits can be expensive, and whether you’re shopping for your still-growing daughter or buying a suit out of your allowance, you'll want to find something you love that doesn’t cost a fortune.

Selections of Swimsuits for Teenage Girls

One good place to start is Target. They always have a huge selection of reasonably priced swimsuits in fun patterns and quality fabrics. Their suits for teens trend towards the slightly more modest, so that girls can feel attractive without being overly sexy; this will please parents as well. Swimmers’ favorite Speedo also makes great suits that are practical for the sporty swimmer, but still bright, lively and even flirty, for a party on the beach.

For the Younger Teens

While a 14-year-old may want to look sexy, it’s really not time yet. A parent can compromise with a brightly patterned swimsuit that is even a two-piece, but still errs on the side of being youthful.

A Web site selling very fun suits for younger teens is Kids Kaper. The company is based in the UK, but caters to customers worldwide. They even, to make it easy to shop, include prices in both dollars and euros. They sell a large range of swim wear by Spanish designer Bóboli. There are:

You can also buy sarongs or skorts to mix and match for cover-ups. The suits are fully lined and feature bold designs like butterflies, beads or psychedelic flowers.

Plus-Sized Teens

Flattering swimsuits for teenage girls who are not rail-thin used to be impossible to find, especially since the attitude was that a plus-sized girl had little business prancing around on the beach or by the pool.

Thankfully, attitudes and designers are changing. For some real-life discussions of good suits for plus-size teens, go to This Next, where contributors have listed a number of fun suits for girls of all sizes. Suggestions so far include the adorable psychedelic heart one-piece tank suit with a matching sarong by St. Tropez – a hot-pink suit great for hot days.

For older teens, there is the pleated one-piece by Kiyonna; a classic, flattering suit with a pleated front bodice lined with power mesh for control and smooth shaping. There is also a shelf bra and bra cups that guarantee you’ll look great in and out of the water! Finally, Torrid makes a number of lively plus-size suits and cover-ups at reasonable prices.

Parents and teens will rarely agree on much, but with so many good choices available, hopefully they'll be able to stop fighting about swimsuits!.

I am 13. I AM considered a teenager. Bikinis aren't just for older teens. We like to show some skin also. I would appreciate it if this article would be more for ALL ages of teens, not just geared twords 15+
