Meet Venus Swimwear Designer Jodi Randolph
Jodi Randolph, is the head designer and Sr. Vice President for Venus Swimwear. Having been with the company since its inception, Jodi has seen Venus grow from a small mail-order catalog company to the multi-million dollar swimwear giant that it is today.
Jodi received her Bachelors degree from Stetson University in 1980, and earned her Masters Degree in Chemistry from Emory University in 1982. Combining her analytical skills with a love of sewing turned out to be a winning combination combination. Today, Venus is known not only for its fabulous prints, but also for great fitting bikinis!
LoveToKnow Swimsuits had a rare opportunity to speak with Jodi about the behind-the-scenes production of Venus Swimwear, and get the inside scoop on what's hot for the 2007 season.

Jodi, tell us how Venus Swimwear became such a force in the swimsuit industry.
Venus became a major player in the swimsuit industry because we listened to our customers! Being direct mail, Venus has had the opportunity to hear directly from the end users. Most other swimsuit designers don't have that luxury.
In swimwear, the fit is number one. No matter how great a bikini looks on the hanger, if it doesn't fit correctly, it will look bad on you, and you will not feel comfortable in the suit. Our mix and match separates and our "perfect fit guarantee" have helped Venus become a household name in swimwear.
Which market is Venus trying to capture with their swimwear?
Venus has defined its customer and refined its patterns to fit that customer. We don't try to be everything to everyone. Our target customer is a figure conscious and fashion savvy woman between the age of 25 and 35, but in reality our customers range in age from sixteen to sixty! Functional, fun, and sexy swimwear has no age. When it fits, it just fits!
The suits are just gorgeous. Who actually designs them?
Venus designs all its swimwear in-house. Our design group chooses the prints, the colors and develops all the body styles and pre-production samples. Since everything is done under one roof, we have a relatively short lead time from the moment we come up with an idea to the time we can put a new bikini into the line.
Where does the inspiration come from?
Inspiration for the swimwear comes from a wide variety of places. Swim trends usually follow sportswear & fashion trends, so we pay a lot of attention to the fashion industry.
For example, rhinestones and bling were first hot in clothing. The following swim season, embellishments were a must! Looking at the prints being worn on the runways of Paris, Milan, New York, gives us inspiration for new prints to create.
We also pay attention to what people are wearing at the beaches, especially California, South Beach, the Caribbean and Brazil. Some styles and prints may be hot topics for fashion magazines, but do people really wear them? Venus designs suits that you want to wear because they are sexy, stylish and fit!
When does development of the next season's line begin?
Each August, we start production of the garments for the catalogs that mail in December. We just finished up the 2007 line in August 2006. In September, we started concentrating on the 2008 swimwear line. We first start with print and color inspirations and then by January of 2007, we will begin to put body styles with the fabrics and accessorize the line.
What are some of the coming hot trends in swimwear?
Hot trends for swim 2007? The string bikini has seen a revitalization and is more popular than ever! Subtle embellishments are also very popular, as well as foil treatments on fabrics.
What do you think next season's "must have" colors and prints will be?
For color, browns, greens, and purples are very important, and don't forget black/white either- this combo is still a very important player.
If I had to choose a single must have color for 2007, it would have to be chocolate brown. Wear it as a solid or a print that incorporates the warmth of brown with splashes of color or foil. Brown is slenderizing like black, and looks great on every skin tone.
On the print scene, scenics, retro Hawaiian prints and geometrics will be seen throughout the marketplace. It's important to choose a print that fits your personality. At Venus, you'll find over fifty different prints from which to choose.
Can you give us any hints about what we can expect when Venus' next collection comes out?
Every season Venus introduces new body styles to fit the needs and desires of its customers. This year, we are introducing some new tankini styles with one of them being an "enhancer" tankini that really flatters your bustline. The VenusĀ® enhancer bra is always a favorite and is available in most of our fabrics.
For 2007, you will see everything from the simplest string bikini to a highly beaded and embellished bikini. With our wide range of prints and solids, you are sure to find your "dream" swimsuit.
Does Venus produce any companion lines to their swimwear?
Venus manufactures under only one label. In addition to the swimwear line, we also have a fashion division that offers clothing from sportswear to club wear, and these clothes are designed with the same customer in mind. We market our clothing along with our swimwear in both our catalog mailings and web offerings.
If you could share just one thing about Venus Swimwear with our readers, what would it be?
One thing that I would like to share with your readers about Venus, is that it is our sincere goal to provide our customers with a fashionable, high quality product, and a pleasurable shopping experience.
