Hi Freebodyguard,
Thank you for making your point with us here- we appreciate it!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajSpeedos are neat looking. People that don't like them have body image problems, and grew up thinking different parts of their body were dirty.
-- Contributed by: freebodyguardHi Swim Guy..,
Thanks for sharing with us here, and I think it really is something that comes down to personal preference; I'm really happy that someone corrected that child because it's wrong to mock people no matter what, so it's a good lesson. Thanks again for sharing!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajSpeedos are awesome, I wear them all the time and get nothing but good remarks about them. I even heard on kid start to mock me and his friend quickly correct him and say thats a real man.
-- Contributed by: Swim Guy 12Hi Chad,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your opinion with us here and for joining the conversation. It seems that people on both sides of this issue have very strong feelings about the Speedo, so voicing your opinion helps to add a wider context. Thanks again!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI have to agree with Mike. Why do people here in North America make such a big deal over a man wearing a real swimsuit instead of a pair of trousers. Like he said, though "speedos" are technically legal you can't wear them swimming or sunning at the beach without all the half-hidden giggles, muffled comments, jeers and insults. Women are free to wear what they want regardless of age or level of fitness - and they should, but so should a man. In this age where people are piercing themselves in the tongue, nipples and eyebrows and covering themselves in grotesque tatoos and for what practical purpose? And hardly anyone gives it a second thought to these body mutilators, why can't a man wear a "speedo" for swimming and sunning? It's just a swimsuit. And for the record I am NOT gay nor an exhibitionist, I just like to swim.
-- Contributed by: ChadHi Mike,
I think a lot of people agree with you. I'm not sure why all this judging and caring about what others are wearing is such a big deal either- but it is (as we can see from these comments, this is quite a hot button issue!). Thanks so much for taking the time to share your point of view with us here!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Guys, I as an European am very surprised about the judgmental views of men wearing speedos in North America. In Europe I wouldn't ever give it a thought that somebody would judge me for wearing speedos. Neither would I judge anybody. I completely lost any appetite to go swimming or on a beach in North America where I live right now. Wearing any kind of "parachute" takes any joy away from swimming and relaxing on the beach from me. Let alone the feeling that people are judging you. Why don't you all just lighten up a bit and get a life.
-- Contributed by: MikeHi Papa,
I think you are right about looking like a movie star- in the grander scheme of things; it's really a frivolous way of conducting oneself. That said though, everyone's entitled to their opinion and life philosophy. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your point of view with us here- we really appreciate it!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajPersonally I prefer a speedo type suit to the ridiculous suits that everyone is wearing just because they are way more practical for swimming. I don't have ripped abs, and I'm not at what you would call an ideal weight or age given the responses to this article.
However, if people, especially in America would get off the "I must look like this movie star or that pop icon" horse, we'd all be better off.
Swimsuits ultimately are a waste of fabric anyway and should only be worn when necessary
-- Contributed by: PapaHi Kalikiano,
Like some of the other posts on this site, you make some excellent points! I think the bottom line is that if you look good in it, and it's comfortable for you, then you should wear it.
I really liked what you said about "awareness, good taste and good judgment"- I think that really sums it up well. I wish everyone would use that marker when making decisions. Thanks for this well thought-out post!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI am almost 63. I've worn nothing but Speedos since I was on my high school swim team. Throughout my life I've maintained both muscular and cardiovascular fitness through running, bicycling, and weight work. Today I am as fit and healthy as I was 30 years ago and I am not ashamed to say I look good in my Speedo. My wife of 20 years thinks so too. I agree that Speedo type suits are best on toned, fit bodies. The same is true for women. It's all about awareness, good taste, and good judgement, isn't it? Since I have worked abroad for several decades, wearing a Speedo is perfectly natural for me. Only in America does the Speedo seem to be a transgression against the perceived norm. Personally, I could care less about what others think about Speedos; they work for me and if anything, I think those baggy parachutes favored by adolescents called 'board shorts' are FAR more grotesque than a Speedo could ever be.
-- Contributed by: KalikianoHi Gus,
I think you make an excellent case for the Speedo-I've actually never heard that argument before, so thank you for sharing it with us here. As for the controversy- you're right, this product does get people talking. Thanks again for sharing!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajBikini style swimsuits for men will always stir controversy here in the United States. The obvious question you must ask yourself if you choose to wear one; is it for function or fashion? Fuctionally, nothing beats them. It's the same thing as spandex shorts for cycling. Sure there are some people that object to bike shorts as well, but you see people wearing those everyday. Why? Because they make sense for the sport as do Speedos. As for fashion, trends always change and people will always have positive or negative comments no matter what you wear. Women of all shapes and sizes wear bikinis or less. If a man wants to wear a speedo style suit, so be it. I for one wear a speedo every chance I get. You can't beat the tanlines, warmth of the sun on your thighs, and freedom of movement in the water. It's personal preference and I will never stop wearing them. Speedos rock!
-- Contributed by: GusHi Observer,
Thanks for joining the conversation here and contributing- we appreciate it!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajFitness and other aesthetics (hair-free) are often cited as a pre-requisites for men wearing a speedo, however, the actual difference in coverage between a speedo and shorts is a few inches of thigh. Flabby bellies, saggy pecs and hairy backs are just as bad in shorts as speedos.
As for anyone's concerns about them being too tight and form fitting - it's a swim suit! We don't expect women to swim in shorts and t-shirts (in most places on the planet anyway).
-- Contributed by: ObserverHi James,
I think you're right- folks really have no right to judge anyone else, especially when it comes to fashion! Thanks for taking the time to contribute with us here- we really appreciate it!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Leafcar,
First, thank you for contributing here! And second, you're right, but as we become more global, attitudes may start to change here. You should be able to wear what makes you feel good! Thanks again!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI think more guys should wear speedos, they are way more functional than board shorts. They are a lot easier to swim in and dry off a lot quicker too.
-- Contributed by: Jamesso I realized when people make stupid comments about it they are just afraid of their true self pointless really I wear a speedo to the beach and pool so what! I can accept myself for who and what I really am and I don't look down on other who do the same
I think these two tenants should the first is judge not unless you be judged
the second is do onto others as you would expect them to do to you
-- Contributed by: Jaywhat baithing suit a guy wears is not as important as how they act towards others or how they speak of ohter insucurities are shown by people whom say that guys who wear speedos are gay or some other inoguios and ignorant commet of that nature my point is if you don't have emotional or personal sucurity or you don't like who you are or accept yourself for who you are this is pretty much the kind of person you are but if you are the kind of person who can accept themself and are of intellegence wisdom and knowledge you would not actually care what type of swimsuit someelse weras period
-- Contributed by: JayHi I am 17 years old and I were speedo style swimsuits during the summer. To the beach or in our pool. I am from the United States and most guys don't wear them. It would be nice if it were more diverse in America. People in other countrys wear them and they are not look down upon.
-- Contributed by: LeafcarHi Wayne,
Thank you for sharing with us here!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautaji love them.
-- Contributed by: WAYNE DOUGLAS MOOREHi Jim,
Thanks for sharing your opinion with us here and for joining the conversation with us! We appreciate your feedback and I'm sure a lot of our visitors will be happy to read your opinion. Thanks again!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajSpeedo type swimsuits are great. The feel great and encourage you to stay in shape. It's still hard for me to admit that I wear speedos regularly because of the "taboo" associated with them, but I enjoy wearing them and that's all that matters. I am serious when I say, once you've tried them you will never want to go back to board shorts!
-- Contributed by: JimHi Kent,
You raise such an interesting point, but it's one that really can only be answered through an in depth study of sexuality throughout the ages. Since that's not quite possible here, the best thing you can do is what all of us should be doing when we are greeted with a stereotype- dispel it. If enough people do that, hopefully, one day, we'll have a universe without all those distracting stereotypes. Thanks so much for sharing with us here- we truly appreciate it!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajWhy is a "speedo" on a man considered "racy" when womens swimming suits are next to the skin? Why the double standard? Speedo briefs are so much more practical and comfortable than trunk swimming suits. I chaff in trunk swimming suits. I get and keep cold much easire in trunk swimming suits.
What is the aversion to the male body compared to the female?
-- Contributed by: KentHi Jerry,
Kudos to you! Nothing feels better than staying in shape- when you look good, you feel good! Thanks so much for sharing here and letting others know your speedo experience!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI'm 64, I workout to keep fit & look tidy. I love to wear swim briefs, I own several pairs. Both my wife & myself think I look good. It makes me feel sexy at the beach.
Hi Adam,
Thank you for joining the conversation here and for sharing your point of view!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Randy,
Thank you for sharing your experience here. It really important for our visitors to see all sides of the speedo story, so thanks again!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI've been wearing them for years and I'm middle aged now. I've never had a problem with them and while I'm not athletic, I'm not heavy either. I've found the women I've dated prefer the speedo look on me. I'll be wearing one on my vacation soon.
-- Contributed by: RandySpeedo's are totally functional and more boys should start waring them and then continue to keep their bodies & health in good shape as they grow up.
-- Contributed by: AdamIt may be hard to believe, but it's true. Check out this link for a story about a man that was actually ticketed for wearing a speedo. It even made the national news. Under the cir...stances, checking ahead isn't such a bad idea.
-- Contributed by: KellyI've never been anywhere -- public pool, beach, apartment swimming pool, etc. -- where speedo type men's suits were not allowed. I think the propriety "check ahead" comment is ridiculous. I always wear speedos or Aussiebum suits. It is really what a man feels comfortable with. Women's suits are almost down to a few square inches of fabric, so what gives?
